rEACHING OUT

Finding the right mental health support can be challenging, especially when there are so many options available. Mental health is so much more important then we think and at times we only really acknowledge it when things have gotten so bad.

It is so very important for blokes to have a close network where they are able to feel seen and heard. To be surrounded by people who understand what they have been through and to not judge them for not being able to regulate their emotions, we are only human after all.

Being vulnerable at first, made me feel sick in my stomach, I never wanted to be a burden to others and I would always go around saying “yeah I’m fine”. All I was doing was lying to my self and not showing my self the respect, I deserved.

Turns out being vulnerable was the best thing for me, I was changing the stigma around mental health and learning new things about me. The more I started to talk to others the less embarrassed I was around being vulnerable. I was no longer letting my self suffer in silence and had found a way to stop bottling everything up.

I have been so lucky that I have several people in my life, who have watched me time and time again make some of the most questionable decisions, gone down the wrong path and have gotten my self in some situations I am lucky to be alive.

Having these people in my corner, never losing faith kept the light shining when all I was seeing was darkness. It is so important to find people who are willing to listen to you, to let you feel safe. There comes a time where it is okay to let others help us, to understand we are not burdens, we are worthy of being happy.

If you're able to stop and reflect on life, and are wanting to make a significant change in your mental state, you have already started your healing journey by having the self awareness something is wrong. For that I am so proud of you very being able to identify there is something wrong at an early stage. The earlier you can intervene the easier it is to look deep within and make the appropriate changes to mend on your own.

If you have anyone close to you that is struggling at the moment, has been suffering in silence for a long time be respectful and be a safe place for them to be vulnerable around you. Listen to what they are going through, by letting them get the thoughts out into the open, to let them engage in conversation, shows them they are not alone, they have someone who has taken the time out of their day to help them out.
